How to choose your coaching niche: the 3-Step Clarity System
Choose your coaching niche in three steps. Pick one real person you deeply understand (Who). Define the change you create, from where they are now to where they want to be in 3 to 6 months (From and To). Share your personal reason for helping (Story). Then say it in one line: I help [who] go from [where they are now] to [where they want to be].
"My niche is not clear."
I hear this in almost every workshop I run. Many coaches wait months for perfect clarity before they post, sell or speak to anyone.
Here is the truth: you do not need a perfect niche. You need a niche that is clear enough to start. It gets sharper every time you talk to a real client.
I use a simple method with my students. I call it the 3-Step Clarity System.
Step 1: Who. Pick one real person
Not a group. Not a market. One person you can picture.
If you cannot imagine one real person's face, your Who is not clear enough.
Here is the difference:
- Too broad: "everyone", "people", "coaches", "women"
- Clear: "beginner coaches who post daily but get no clients"
- Clear: "working women who feel stuck after marriage"
Describe this person in five lines. How old are they? What do they do for work? What keeps them awake at night? What have they already tried that did not work? If you have a past client who fits, use them.
Step 2: From and To. Define the change you create
People do not buy coaching. They buy a change in their life. So get very clear on that change.
- From: where your person is right now. Their Monday morning. Their pain. Their first thought when they wake up.
- To: where they badly want to be in 3 to 6 months.
- The gap: what is missing in between, that you actually help with.
Two examples:
- From "posting daily with zero leads" to "getting 5 to 10 inbound leads every week"
- From "anxious, sleepless and overwhelmed" to "sleeping 8 hours and feeling in control"
Step 3: Story. Why you?
Not your certificate. Your story.
What is your personal connection to this problem? What was the moment you decided to help people with it? What have you already done that proves you can?
My own story is simple. I spoke only Odia until college, my salary was cut in half in 2020, and I built my business by going live every day for 365 days. That is why coaches who feel invisible trust me. They see themselves in it.
Your story is the one thing no competitor can copy.
The one-line clarity statement
Now put all three together in one line:
I help [who] go from [where they are now] to [where they want to be].
For example: "I help new coaches go from posting with no response to getting their first 10 clients without paid ads."
Put this line in your Instagram and LinkedIn bio. Say it when people ask what you do. If someone replies "that is me", you are close.
How do you know your niche is right?
Ask the market before you build anything. Before my students create an offer, they run a short survey: a Google Form with 5 questions about their audience's struggles, goals and the help they want. They share it with friends, WhatsApp groups and past contacts.
If people say "this is exactly my problem", you are on the right track. If nobody replies, your Who or your From and To needs work. Either way, you learn more in one week of real answers than in one month of thinking.
Common niche mistakes
- Picking what looks popular instead of a problem you truly understand.
- Staying broad to "not miss anyone". When you speak to everyone, nobody feels you are speaking to them.
- Changing your niche every week. Your message will keep improving as you talk to clients, and that is normal. But your Who should not change every time a post does badly.
